Eden: Who We Are 

Eden is a social enterprise and women’s empowerment organisation fighting human trafficking and sexual exploitation in Myanmar. Our model is holistic and trauma-informed. Eden walks alongside survivors over months and years, providing the psychological, emotional, economic, and practical foundations they need to build resilient lives.


Eden’s programmes include:

  • Drop-in centres providing safe space, daily stipends, food assistance, vocational training, financial literacy, and urban farming education.

  • Trauma counselling and trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy, delivered by qualified counsellors, Eden beneficiaries show a 95% decrease in PTSD symptoms after three months of counselling.

  • Creative therapies including art, dance, and music therapy.

  • Outreach through a mobile clinic and community programmes, reaching thousands of women each year.

  • Rescue and safe shelter for trafficking victims.

  • Trafficking awareness training to reduce vulnerability to re-trafficking

  • A social enterprise programme that creates non-exploitative income for survivors

In 2025 alone, Eden reached over 11,000 trafficking survivors through these programmes.

 

The Human Trafficking Crisis in Myanmar

Myanmar is in the midst of one of the worst human trafficking crises in its history. Since the military coup on February 1, 2021, the country has been locked in civil conflict and its poorest communities have been pushed to the edge. Almost half of the population is in poverty and 3.2 million people have been internally displaced. The economy has collapsed and families who were already surviving on almost nothing now have nothing at all.

In this environment, traffickers thrive. When a mother cannot feed her children, when a young woman cannot repay a loan or cover rent, the false promises of traffickers become impossible to resist. Eden has recorded a 300% increase in women and girls engaging in survival sex since the pandemic alone. The pipeline from poverty to exploitation is direct, and it is accelerating.

The collapse of the healthcare system has deepened the crisis further. Medical attention is increasingly unavailable or unaffordable. Women with infections, injuries, or trauma have nowhere to turn. Basic hygiene, nutrition, and access to essential supplies have become luxuries that most of the women Eden serves simply cannot access.
