The tiniest pinprick of light permeates even the darkest places of the world. At Eden, our Outreach teams carry the first message of hope many trafficking victims have ever heard. We spread the good news that if they hold onto hope and take steps toward their dreams, they can come true. This kind of hope is contagious. It gives victims the courage and strength to escape, and helps rescued women learn to dream again.
Yuan Yuan was nine years old when she was first abused by a neighbor in her village. She grew up with the belief that she must be a bad person for this to have happened to her.
Like so many young women from villages, she left home at 17 to find work in the city. On her way, she was kidnapped and taken to a locked room. Yuan Yuan fought hard for her freedom, even as her captors poured boiling water on her to make her do as they said. Eventually broken, Yuan Yuan descended into hopelessness for the next few years. She did whatever her captors asked of her. She didn’t fight anymore.
The tiniest pinprick of light permeates even the darkest places of the world.
Eden staff met Yuan Yuan one night on Outreach. Our message of hope brought light to her dark world. The love and kindness she experienced from team members helped her frozen heart begin to thaw. She found the power and strength to escape her dark situation because of this newfound hope.
Yuan Yuan began working for Eden as she healed from her physical and mental scars. She gained much needed self-worth from Eden’s identity and confidence course. Her warm personality and hopeful spirit are beginning to emerge as she dreams about her future and becomes empowered to achieve those dreams.
The Salt & Light Collection uses the imagery of salt and light as a metaphor. It speaks of the hope that is created when we stand together and commit to bring love and empowerment to women like Yuan Yuan. Each of us can bring light into dark places by speaking up for those without a voice and working toward a world where no one is bought or sold. We hope you will wear the Salt & Light Collection as a reminder that even the tiniest pinprick of light can overcome the darkest places.
He went out to the spring of the waters, and cast the salt into it, and said: I have healed these waters, and there shall be no more death or barrenness in them.
–2 Kings 2:21
Salt & Light
of everyday make stars that shine up there
impossible to see, though they burn bright –
Hide lies in flickering smiles that disappear
And leave you empty, naked, stripped and bare
And knowing how to help you is beyond
My anything – but know when it appears
For what you used to have and you just can’t
Imagine how you ever could belong
To disappear – remember this: I care.
That star you have around your neck, in front
Speaks truth. There are hope, light and even joy,
Though leaving seems ridiculously hard
Their eyes, because the promise is for real
That if you let this salt into the void
Old wounds which have been festering unchecked
And love, before it possibly can yield
By temper, habits, ugliness or rage
But show me that instead, you will protect
And light into this dim but powerful dream.
